Dynamics of Domestic Violence : Blogging with Dr. Belcher
Blogging with Dr. Belcher
Alice Belcher is an inspiring writer. Here you can read some of her writing on subjects of employment, business, social justice, community development and family empowerment.
I wish to congratulate, Nicole Kidman, on her 2017 Emmy Award win and to thank her for shining more light on domestic violence as we move towards the month of October, Domestic Violence Prevention Month. However, it must be made clear apart from her acceptance speech, that domestic violence is not a disease as she stated. Rather, domestic violence is a dynamic of power and control. Domestic Violence is about “Power and Control” (Duluth Model). The Power and Control dynamic, that we DV Advocates speak to when defining what domestic violence looks like, is the Duluth model devised by Domestic Violence Advocates through empirical study and research with the inclusion of Survivors of domestic violence. The best example that I can give to explain and to show why domestic violence is about power and control and that it is not a disease, nor associated with a disease, aside from those power and control patterns of behavior given in the Duluth Model, is this: domestic violence abusers do not abuse everyone, nor do they abuse all of the time. Domestic violence abusers can control when and who they abuse. Domestic violence abusers may abuse in one relationship and not abuse in another relationship. This is precisely because they can control their behavior. A 'disease' CANNOT be controlled. If you have a disease, you have a disease and the disease is beyond your control.
